Last week, we announced Whrrl v2.3 for the iPhone launched in the Apple App Store. We’re very excited about this latest upgrade because it includes several new features that we think you’ll really enjoy. This release is also a major step towards fulfilling our product vision. If you missed Jeff Holden‘s blog post about our vision, you can read it here. (You can also read what TechCrunch wrote about the new Whrrl here).
Today, Whrrl v2.3 launches in its entirety, including the introduction of Whrrl Societies and Fun Facts. Now with Whrrl, you’ll be able to:
- Check in to the places you go and put yourself on the grid. At happy hour? At brunch? At the mall?Check in anywhere.
- Discover Fun Facts about your social relationships with the places you go. Think about the places you regularly visit. How often have you been there relative to your friends? Where do people go next?
- Unlock memberships into Societies with people that have real-world patterns like yours. Have you ever wondered who else goes to the same places you do? How often? When? Find out who else is a member of your societies and share with people who have the same interests.
- Share and Like Individual Slides. You can now share out individual notes and photos. Your friends can also “like” your individual check-ins, photos and notes in real time while you’re out and about. Ask your friends what bag to buy, what to eat for lunch. Put anything up towards a vote.
But that’s not all. We’ve also taken the red ribbon off Whrrl.com. Now you’ll be able to view and sort your check- ins by people, places and neighborhoods. See what societies you and your friends are in. View a live feed of your friend’s activity. Whrrl makes it possible to search within your life!
What do you think of Whrrl v2.3 and Whrrl.com? We’d love to hear! Email us: feedback@whrrl.com.
Happy Whrrling!

With the latest Whrrl release for the iPhone (v2.3) that launched today, we’ve introduced a term that I’ve talked about since 2006: ”footstream.” It’s a term we coined to describe something a tad geeky, but which we believe will have profound positive consequences on the way people live their lives.
A footstream is simply a digital record of the places a person goes in the real world. To be clear, “place” is different from “location,” by which people usually mean a point on the planet specified by latitude and longitude. “Place,” as we’re using the term, means a named entity, one that generally has an address in the real world, like the Starbucks at the corner of Spring and Third in Seattle. We like latitudes and longitudes, but we’re fanatical about place, because it is so much more semantically rich than location.
My footstream, then, contains the specific restaurants, parks, bars, movie theaters, hotels, ferry terminals, grocery stores, clothing stores, cleaners, coffee shops, auto repair shops, amusement parks, museums, golf courses, gyms, book stores, campus buildings, department stores, and so on that I have visited. In other words, it’s a collection of the places I care enough about to physically go there. There is a lot of information in my footstream; in fact, it’s a powerful expression of my identity.
I gave a talk at the Where 2.0 conference earlier this year in which I attempted to explain why footstreams are so important. I drew an analogy to clickstreams on the Web, sharing several examples of how massive value has been created leveraging clickstreams, from Google’s relevancy ranking algorithms and cost-per-click advertising to Amazon.com’s and StumbleUpon’s personalization technologies.
Similarly, we believe we can unleash vast new value propositions built upon footstreams. Our promise to you: with footstreams, we can unlock discovery and social opportunities in the physical world of a kind never seen before. Our mission with Whrrl is to increase the possibility of adventure and human connection in our real-world lives, and to us this means helping people to break out of their standard social patterns, e.g. going to the same five or six restaurants, and introducing them to remarkably relevant places to go and experiences to have that they otherwise would not have discovered. Imagine having visibility into others’ footstreams — others who you care about, e.g. your friends or people who share some passion with you. What places would pop up on your radar screen that you would never have thought to look for? What kinds of new experiences within places would you discover?
What makes this difficult is that while clickstreams are intrinsic to the Web — by nature of the fact that the Web is already a fully digital experience, every click is already digitized — the places people go is as analog as it gets. How can we capture the places people “click on” in the physical world?

If you haven’t heard the term “check in” (outside of the hotel context), it is the mechanism Whrrl uses for a person to say “I’m here” wherever they are (perhaps in a hotel!) When you arrive at your favorite coffee house, you check in. When you get to the office, you check in. When you go out for happy hour, you check in. The nice thing about checking in, beyond the fact of adding the place to your footstream, is that you completely control when you’re “on the grid” and who can see your current location.
Whrrl v2.3 – You, As Your Footstream
Up through v2.2, Whrrl has been primarily about “storytelling.” This was a step toward our vision, though most of the Whrrl “iceberg” has remained below the surface of the water. While capturing the place where a story happened was an extra in Whrrl v2.2, you’ll see that checking in takes a very central role in Whrrl v2.3, and you’ll find some cool new benefits for doing so (beyond having the place context associated with stories).
In Whrrl v2.3, you express yourself through the places you go and the people you spend time with in the real world. You’ll see this come through loud and clear with this release, particularly on your Whrrl profile page.
Note: Some of the new features I talk about below, like Whrrl Societies, tidbits about your social relationship with places and most of the website changes will turn on in the next couple of weeks. Honestly, we thought Apple was going to take longer to approve our app, given it’s the holidays, but they did it in 6 days! Rest assured that all of your check-ins will count toward Societies and be reflected in your footstream.
By checking in everywhere you go, you’ll establish patterns. Are you a Starbucks person or do you eschew the big chains in favor of independent coffee houses? Fast food or foodie? Do you seek out brewpubs and microbreweries, or is PBR your beverage of choice? Whatever your patterns, you’ll find yourself being accepted into Societies of the real world, an entirely new concept in Whrrl.
Every Society is a mini-community of people who share similar patterns. Since footstreaming patterns are, literally, voting with your feet about the places that are important to you, therein lie expressions of passions. Are you a diner person? How about dive bars? Value shopper or is quality the only thing that matters? Which comic book stores are the real deal and which are posers? At which places are you a “regular?”
We can’t wait to see where the Whrrl community takes Societies, and we have some very cool surprises in store that will make Societies super powerful and fun.
You’ll also see ongoing feedback about your social relationship with places. When you check in somewhere, you might learn which of your other friends have been there, discover that you’re the 2nd most frequent visitor or learn that someone you know is there right now. The more of your friends who Whrrl, the more interesting and fun these little tidbits become.
Of course, as with previous Whrrl versions, you’ll be able to fully capture your experiences at places as photos and notes. Also as before, you can check in with other people and collaborate on your story. And you can share whatever you’re doing in Whrrl with your existing Facebook and Twitter networks. We’ve made improvements to these areas of Whrrl, e.g. the ability to “like” slides (which enables real-time polling, too!) and share individual slides to Facebook and Twitter. We hope you love these new capabilities!
We’re incredibly excited about this release, but know that there is much, much more to come: we’re already hard at work planning the next release. We’d love to hear your feedback, positive or otherwise, about Whrrl v2.3 (especially when all the features are turned on! J). Don’t hesitate to shake the phone for feedback or just send a note to feedback@whrrl.com. (Just so you know, I read every single one of these.)

Thanksgiving has passed, and with it, another Black Friday. Here at Pelago, we saw a lot of Black Friday deals cropping up everywhere from our community… from Target and Old Navy to WalMart and Best Buy… tis the season for great holiday deal. It’s also the season to share these deals with consumers, across all social networks. Our friends and partners, Collective Bias, posted an interesting recap about Black Friday on their blog:
Who won Black Friday? In many cases, the answer is consumers. Thanks to the confluence of social networks and mobile web connectivity, consumers are able to share not only deals and finds, but real time information about the status of inventory and shopping conditions at their local stores. Those following their stories could more efficiently plan their shopping trips thanks to the contributions of the community. Location Based Marketing (LBM), a new form of communication that delivers specific messaging based on the recipients’ location (generally determined by a mobile phone GPS) is in its infancy however, many interesting trends are emerging that will have significant impact on brands and retailers alike.
With over 60% of mobile web traffic passing through some type of social network, it’s rational to assume that shopper behavior would naturally be affected. As part of a participative shopping experiment between Social Shopper Marketing Agency Collective Bias and Pelago’s Life-streaming application Whrrl, 20 bloggers were asked to join a private community by Courtney Velasquez of GiftfullySimple.com and Melissa Garcia of ConsumerQueen.com, and share their Black Friday experiences via the Whrrl platform. From planning to Cyber Monday, the group discussed and networked the best deals and offers from all channels of retail. Additionally, their shopping experiences were woven together though various social media linkages including Twitter and Whrrl hashtag #BFdeals, Facebook and linked through the blogs of the participants.
Walmart was voted as having the best deals by Whrrl users followed closely by Target and Old Navy. While not scientific, the poll mirrored commentary in the community. Most participants found that Walmart had the best prices on items they were seeking. The primary pain point was the inventory level of promoted items. Many shoppers found hot items already gone when they arrived even when their arrival time was very early which they quickly shared via mobile web. This phenomenon also was reported for online retailers. Most also used a combination of online, circular and social shopping to build a shopping strategy (and the majority made lists). Cyber-Monday seemed to have less appeal to the group as most were already well informed of deals and didn’t see any additional benefit, although some commented that many sites were having site specific sales on Monday that required a visit to see the deals (these are likely to be quickly disseminated by social networks).
Combining high-reach social media contributors with location based services creates some powerful opportunities for brands and retailers to connect with consumers in ways that benefit all parties. Lori Falcon, author of acowboyswife.com created her own crowd sourced gift guides and leveraged her shopping experiences to create additional context. The small group had a large impact as well generating millions of impressions of savings and deal finds via Whrrl stories, images, comments etc. Tweetreach.com showed 124,000 impressions from just 50 tweets using the #BFdeals hashtag.
The potential benefit for brands and retailers participating in this conversation is promising. The ability to provide deeper context and content both at the store shelf and beyond coupled with the advocacy of inspired communities creates new opportunity to not only market but truly converse with consumers.

So, whether we’re ready or not, the holidays are upon us. I saw a quip on a blog the other day – pretty soon Thanksgiving is going to be the new Groundhog’s Day, “the forgotten holiday,” because Christmas seems to be pushed on us earlier and earlier each year. I feel we barely passed Halloween, and holiday decorations are already down the isles of Target, grocery stores, etc. Each year we might be forced into thinking a little too earlier about the holidays – but I’m okay with it when it comes to gift giving. In my opinion, it’s never too early to plan for the perfect gift; it leaves me feeling less stressed once they actually approach and I have all my gifts squared away! After all, I’m prefer gift giving over receiving. It’s just so exciting to watch someone open the exact gift you know they’ll love, isn’t it?
Which brings me to gift guides, gift guides, everywhere! We’ve seen a ton of them cropping up on Whrrl. Lori Turk (@TipJunkie) has been sharing her holiday gift ideas (handmade by women!), like guide for gifts under $25:

And Audrey McClellan created a HUGE gift guide, which covers gifts for sporty moms, little girls and boys, “socially conscious” dads and more. Holy cow, Audrey’s gift guide is awesome! It might be the Bible of all gift guides.

How great is it to check into some of your favorite stores to shop at, and bring up a gift guide right on your iPhone! Or create a gift guide to share on your blog! Tell us the gifts to buy from your favorite place to shop for the holidays! A local craft store… the mall… T.J. Max… you name it! We want to see it! You can tag your holiday guide with #holidaygifts or #giftguide, and search all gift guides on Whrrl too!
Happy (pre Thanksgiving) Holidays! :D
Ciaran Blumenfeld, the brain behind Momfluential Reviews, recently wrote a guest piece, titled “I’m a Whrrl Girl!” , which was sent out to all of e.l.f’s customers in their e-newsletter! Here’s what Ciaran had to say:
At times it feels like my life is not only the fast lane, it’s on the autobahn! That’s why I was thrilled to discover Whrrl. It’s a mobile and Web application that allows me to tell my stories on the run – live from the scene – and then share them with my friends and family, as well as my readers on various blogs.
I’ve never had the patience for scrapbooking and I’ve always been an in-the-moment type of gal. With Whrrl, I can take a few snapshots, add in my comments and a text slide or two, and share an event with my pals before I’ve even left the party. It’s super fast, and super easy. Whrrl works with my camera phone via their iPhone app, or via SMS text on any other mobile phone.
If your friends are also on Whrrl, then you can build your stories together and collaborate, sharing your photos from a single event. This was the case when I recently hosted an ELF MUAH (Makeup at Home) party, where several of my friends in attendance, were also telling their stories live via Whrrl. Check out our Whrrl MUAH party here. You can also search for #MUAH on Whrrl and see some of the other successful MUAH parties.
Whrrl stories don’t always end on the scene. After you get home, you can add in your photos from your digital camera, and polish your story from the Web. You can even add more text slides, rearrange your pictures, and send out the finished product via email or as a Twitter or Facebook update (which you can also do from your phone).
Whrrl is a great way to check out what’s going on right now. It’s fun to view other people’s stories as they happen. To sign up, you can use Facebook Connect to quickly and easily connect to all your Facebook friends who are already on Whrrl.

Tonight is Top Chef! Woot! Are you a fan of Top Chef? I watch it every week – those dang Voltaggio Brothers are hard to beat. My bet goes to the final four including both of them,Kevin Gillespie and Jennifer Carroll. But only time will tell… who do you think will make it to the final four?
I can’t place my finger on exactly what keeps me coming back week after week for more Top Chef – the final competition, the Quick Fire Challenges, rooting on my fav contestant, or the FOOD. It might just be the food…what those contestants can do in a quick amount of time with certain ingredients never fails to impress me. Or make me hungry! Now that’s true talent.
But what I really want to see is what YOU can do! Tonight we’re hosting a bit of an impromptu collaboration party for Top Chef’s 10th episode. Snap a quick food porn pic with your phone and e-mail it to TopChef@mywhrrl.com. Whether cooking dinner, trying out a new restaurant or hitting up happy hour – we want to check out the yummy dishes you’re eating!
I dare you to make us drool!

Last week, Whrrl headed to Las Vegas to meet up with some of the best new media and blogging peeps this side of the Mississippi (gathered this side, at least) at BlogWorld Expo. Our team – Jeff Holden, John Kim Heather Meeker, Shafiq Shariff and I – landed in Vegas ready to start a weekend of mingling, networking and Whrrling, which began literally the minute we walked into airport and ran into Maya Bisineer, Paolo Mottola and Paolo Tosolini!

This year’s show was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center and most attendees stayed at the Hilton (next to the convention center), home of the infamous Barry Manilow show. Although the expo hall didn’t open until Friday, we were able to mix and mingle at the Convention Center with great bloggers such as Jen Fowler and Deb Ng. We also discussed our exciting Collective Bias/Whrrl partnership with Jay Thornton, Creative Director at Collective Bias, before it was announced Friday morning.

As with most conferences, there are parties, events and mixers just about every night. The place to be on Thursday was the TechSet party hosted by influencers Brian Solis and Stephanie Agresta at the Bank in Bellagio. Word has it we caught a certain mommy blogger (who will remain nameless) pole dancing. (Jeff snapped a picture, but apparently what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas when you’re taking pics on an iPhone). Theparty networking then continued as everyone followed Brian to Caramel in Bellagio where the VIPs were in attendance. It was a great kick-off to the conference!

The next day, we were up bright and early for a full day of panels and networking at the conference. We spent time with some of the most lovely bloggers (Katja, Alli, Jyl, Lucretia, Zane, Amanda, Lindsay, Stephanie and SO many more, it’s hard to name everyone) and chatted with some of our favorite online personalities: Guy Kawasaki (Heather made a deal that if Guy wore a Whrrl t-shirt, she’d wear an Alltop t-shirt), Chris Brogan (John got a copy of Trust Agents signed) and Mark Horvath from InvisiblePeople.tv.

Friday night, we attended the SITScation cocktail party. What does SITS stand for you ask? “Secrets in the Sauce” – a site dedicated to helping new bloggers get exposure and feel part of a community. I couldn’t believe the numbers of fabulous ladies in attendance. We were able to dance and laugh all evening withamazing women such as @CarissaRogers, @BabyBlooze, @theyearofhope, @houseofprince @katjapresnal and more! We even caught Shafiq in a pink boa! Now THAT’s something to be documented!

We wrapped up the conference on Saturday with an awesome blogger and brands speed dating eventsponsoredby Collective Bias that included us along with ELF Cosmetics, Soyjoy, Catalina Marketing, Healthy Choice, Crocs and Genesis Today. Just like speed dating, we had a set amount of time to chat with bloggers such as @HighImpactMom, @sahans, @buckdaddy and @wandertot about their blogs and ways we could partner together. It was one of our favorite events of the show.

We kicked off the last night with a farewell Blogworld pool party at the Hilton, set outside on a lovely and warm Vegas evening. Jyl Johnson Pattee from MomitForward.com, Ben Parr from Mashable.com and Krista Perry from Park City Mountain Resort, all decided to do an impromptu cannonball into the pool for charity, which ended up raising $2,000 in less than one half hour for Shoes 4 Africa. And what would Vegas be without one last hurrah? TechKaraoke, hosted by Brett Petersel from Mashable.com, was held in the Hilton casino- conveniently located on your way back from the pool party. Heather started out the evening taking the stage for a rendition of Love on the Rocks by Neil Diamond (brave girl). Other notables of the evening include George G. Smith Jr. for the awesome dancing, Wayne Sutton for the rap, Amanda Coolong for the BEST rendition of Black Velvet we’ve ever heard, and a whole lot of mommy bloggers for rocking the tambourines and plastic guitars!
Sadly, we did have to eventually say goodbye to Vegas, baby, but what happens in Vegas doesn’t stay there- now you have all the dirt! On behalf of the entire team, we really enjoyed meeting new friends and seeing old ones too! Don’t miss out onall the fantastic Whrrl stories created at BlogWorld Expo! Till next time!
Recently, Robert Scoble – well known technology blogger, evangelist and author- visited Seattle. His goal was to visit up and coming start-ups in the area to learn more about their technologies. We were thrilled to have the opportunity for him to visit Pelago and have our CEO, Jeff Holden, provide an overview of Whrrl.
As always, Scoble had some great questions which helped reveal not just information about Whrrl, but what the future holds for the product and our company.
