Tour de France
The end of July saw the Tour de France come through Bourg St Maurice. The Tour is the world’s biggest spectator sport with over ten million people lining the route and this year, as ever, the whole valley was taken over by visitors from across Europe and the US.
We had the ITV production crew and commentar...y team staying with us and with such amazing performances by British riders the excitement was greater than ever.
The cyclists started in Martigny near Verbier in Switzerland and headed over the Grand St Bernard pass, down into the Italian town of Aosta. Then they climbed up through La Thuile and over the Petit St Bernard (past the cafe where we stop for Bombardinos in winter), through La Rosiere and down into Bourg.
With the guests departed for a busy day producing the afternoon commentary and evening show we took the opportunity to head down early to Bourg to soak up the carnival like atmosphere. The streets were lined with people ten deep, the bars were mobbed and the sun shone all day. It was a terrific spectacle and with big screens everywhere we were able to follow the action which was particularly exciting as the riders approached the Petit St Bernard.
