To stay abreast of the latest trends in off-season attractions, SAM Magazine attended the 2009 International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Trade Show in Las Vegas last November. The show hosted more than 30,000 attendees, among them ski industry veteran...s Brian Fairbank of Jiminy Peak, Mass., and Ben Wilcox of Cranmore Mountain Resort, N.H. SAM tagged along to record their impressions and ventured off on its own to explore the newest developments in the attractions business. The primary cause of the lift accident at Devil’s Head Resort Dec. 17 was a massive failure of the chairlift’s gearbox, according to the resort. Fourteen people were injured when the lift rolled backward after a stop.
