The mood of the concert in honour of Finland’s Independence Day will still be that of the Central European tour conducted by Jukka-Pekka S...araste. One of the tour’s two soloists, Pekka Kuusisto, will play Sibelius’s Humoresques and Serenades – both from the core violin-and-orchestra repertoire by Sibelius along with the Violin Concerto. Sibelius himself described his Sixth Symphony as violent, passionate and gloomy with pastoral contrasts. The patriotic sentiments inspired by Independence Day will culminate in Finlandia.

Chinese composer Tan Dun, who now lives in the United States and has made an indelible mark on the world’s musical scene wit...h his individual compositional concepts and personal ideas, has recently been in the news because of his Internet Symphony for the YouTube Symphony Orchestra. This concert features his Guitar Concerto Yi2 and its dramatic effects, executed by Finnish virtuoso Ismo Eskelinen. Okko Kamu will also be conducting the Second Symphony by Robert Schumann, again in dramatic and highly rhythmical vein.
