I could watch Barry Lyndon everyday and never get tired of it. Just sort of turn it on at any point in the movie and watch. I don't think I've ever seen the camera used in such a lyrical way.

I mean, it's almost too much to take. The poetic balance of shot after shot is psychotic. In one shot a pack of young soldiers sweeps in fresh and ready. In the next shot (maybe even the same shot?) a beaten ragged bunch limp out of the frame.

I feel like Barry Lyndon is one of his least seen/discussed films ... but more or less the forgotten masterpiece.

The story might be boring sometimes but the atmosphere that Kubrick uses: Costumes, cinematography, language spoken, way of telling the story, unknown traditions, the music, the beauty of the bourgeoisie and love makes you want to watch it even more again and again.
It's just a brillant piece of art !

it's a boring story i agree, but tha t the point: kubrick wants ,in this movie, to create the XVIII century's atmosphere. A young boy who became riche famous etc and get down tha's classical and specifique of XVIII century and, anyway, of all the litterature. Almost, kubrick talk about a visual experience, a visual movie, so we have to don't care about the story, because, we have enough sensation(and understanding) with with the picture, the best ever showed ithink!!!
Scuse my english it's very bad

I would also add that of any filmed adaption of a novel, Barry Lyndon is the one that makes me feel the most like I'm inside a book. I don't know how to explain it but Kubrick somehow preserved the sense of "reading" the story.

It pains me to say it but, whilst it is beautifully shot and acted, I just found it a bit...dull. Very sorry to say it as I do not find any of his other works dull at all.

Sugar cotton candy de-luxe. My fourth favorite film of all time. I never tire of it, I wonder at Kubrick's love for detail and his choice of music. Camera work, costume design, lighting! I can watch it over and over again and still can't get enough. So what if it's long, slow, corny and syrupy? I have a very sweet tooth and no cavities.

I havent seen any movie better than Barry Lyndon, in the Kabalah tradition it uses "restriction" as a way to perfection, to achieve this kind of masterpiece without an epic story is something that shows the genius of Kubrik as Director, of course there are other more "entertaining" movies, but I think as Margot de Marco said that Barry Lyndon is THE MOVIE!! and I will keep reading all the posts maybe to gain more insight about what to look for the next time I see it again, for me it is a gourmet meal the size of a faraonic feast.

I've watched Barry Lyndon every year since I was 19...It's not enough!
It is perfect, every second of this film is a poem!!!!
Unfortunately some people that I know, don't appreciate this film and think that it is the most boring Kubrick's film.
They are far from the truth!

Barry Lyndon survives as an undiscovered masterpiece, but I don't think it packs the spiritual punch that some of his other films, primarily 2001 and Paths of Glory, provide. It's a great film. Entertaining in a way that I've never been entertained before.

"Barry Lyndon" benefits from repeated watchings--the, um, deliberate pacing becomes less of a problem--the story becomes less boring--once you are familiar with the events of the characters' lives. You can enjoy each scene on its own, episodically, without concern for plot (or lack of plot).

That's what i really like in Kubrick's films. He didnt need any guns or girls. He could create a story full in emotions by using only nice words, costumes, music, photography, settings. And i think that is why we all like Barry Lyndon.
Those who say it is a boring film might be right (in a way), but the movie itself is soo attractive (maybe also because we do not really know how the people used to live at that time, how they acted and how the bourgeoisie worked) that we feel absorbed.

The first time I saw Barry Lyndon in a cinema I was 17, twenty years ago. I can't forget the deep emotion that the plot, the music and the work of cinematographer John Alcott have created in me. I couldn't believe to my eyes and my ears. Afterwards, I've never felt nothing like that

He shot this film with a lens that was originally designed for a spy satellite. This hypersensitive lens made it possible to film in candlelight. He did not use any electric lights, and that helps creating a sense of realism. Tables are positioned by windows, just like they would have been in reality, to to get as much daylight as possible. Little things can add realism a lot.

I always wanted to see Barry Lyndon and I hate to admit it but I wasn't really interested just because of how slow I heard it was but I was able to obtain a copy of it not too long ago and I just saw it and I wish I saw it much sooner because it is such a great film, not just by a technical aspect but story wise it was great.

Underrated, amazingly perfect film... perhaps Kubrick's second best film. (After 2001 of course)

Barry Lyndon is the kind of movie you SHOULDN'T show on film school. With few others It can give you the idea to change field of study. You may think You'll never have the chance to do something similar

It is true he used XVIII century style underwear to give actors an idea on how to move?
